What is biomass?

Biomass is any organic matter that is available on a renewable or recurring basis, including:

  • animal waste and bedding (such as poultry litter)
  • dedicated energy crops
  • agricultural by-products
  • crop residues (such as alfalfa stems and corn residues)
  • wood and wood wastes
  • grasses

What qualifies a material as biomass?

Biomass is:

  • endlessly renewable
  • created by solar energy
  • 100% natural
  • carbon-neutral
  • generally non-toxic and free from chemical contamination

What kinds of biomass does Fibrowatt use?

Poultry litter will be a common fuel to all of Fibrowatt’s U.S. power plants. The other biomass used will vary based on what is locally abundant.
