Poultry Litter Application
Preventing over-application of poultry litter
Isn’t poultry litter a good fertilizer?
While poultry litter can be a good source of crop nutrients, so much poultry litter is generated in concentrated poultry production areas that finding crop farms with sufficient acreage for all of these nutrients can be difficult.
Is an excess of nutrients really harmful?
Over-application can lead to a build-up of excess nutrients in the soil. In turn, the excess can result in high levels of nutrient runoff to groundwater and surface waterways, which degrades water quality. Furthermore, excess litter application can lead to the release of nitrous oxide, which is a potent greenhouse gas.
