Sampson County, N.C.

The Fibrowatt plant will be located on a tract adjacent to I-40 in Sampson County near the town of Faison. Identified previously as the Bowman-Ireland site, this was one of several sites proposed by the county.
Key facts
Overview
- Construction of the Sampson County plant is expected to begin in 2009, with a projected plant opening in 2011.
- The site is located near the intersection of I-40 (Exit 355) and NC 403.
- The site is located in the heart of the eastern North Carolina poultry industry.
- The site is located strategically with good road access to large supplies of poultry litter in Sampson, Duplin, Wayne, and other regional poultry-rearing counties.
- The Plant will help the state of North Carolina meet its commitment to renewable energy and providing important greenhouse gas benefits.
- An alternative, beneficial use for poultry litter that will reduce a grower’s exclusive reliance on land application.
- FibroCoast will create approximately 100 new jobs in the Sampson County area.
Electricity
This project involves a 55-megawatt power plant that will produce enough electricity to serve approximately 40,000 homes.
Next Steps
To complete the development of the Sampson County project, Fibrowatt must finalize three key components:
- Agreeing to a power purchase agreement to sell the renewable energy generated by the 55-megawatt plant.
- Fibrowatt must complete a comprehensive permitting process to demonstrate that the plant will meet all state and federal air quality and other environmental standards.
- Obtain financing for the plant. Project financing is expected to exceed $200 million, covering the costs of project development, permitting, financing and plant design, construction, and capital equipment.
