Surry County, N.C.
The Surry County renewable energy power plant will be located on a 60-acre tract outside of Elkin on N.C. Highway 268. The site is about two miles east of Interstate 77 (exit 85).
The plant will provide poultry growers with an important alternative for the management of poultry litter in western North Carolina.

Overview
Fibrowatt plants offer many environmental benefits:
- providing poultry farmers with an important alternative to land application of poultry litter
- contracts with poultry farmers for the collection of litter assist farmers in the management of manure, and can minimize the need for long-term storage of the litter
- will help North Carolina utilities meet state mandates for minimum requirements for renewable energy
Electricity
The plant is is designed to produce up to 40 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy, enough to power for approximately 30,000 homes.
Economic impact
The plant is expected to contribute at least $10 million annually to the local economy through
- fuel purchases,
- transportation,
- employee payroll, and
- facility maintenance costs.
The construction phase and long-term operation of the plant will bring in much-needed jobs for the region:
- during the two-year construction phase, as many as 300 construction jobs
- after operation of the plant begins, 80 or more jobs in plant operations, fuel transportation, barn cleanout services, and operation of the adjacent ash fertlizer plant.
